Konstantin Maroulis is an American rocker, actor, and writer. He is best known as the lead vocalist of the rock band "Pray for the Soul of Betty," the sixth-place finisher on the fourth season of the reality show "American Idol," and a Tony nominee for his leading role in the musical "Rock of Ages."
Early Life and Education
Maroulis was born on September 17, 1975, in New York, to a family of American-Greek descent. His ancestors immigrated to the United States in the 1920s. As a result, Konstantin is Orthodox and speaks Greek fluently. His older brother, Athan, is a music producer, and his sister, Anastasia, is a school director. Influenced by his older brother, Konstantin developed an interest in music at a young age. He started learning to play the trumpet at the age of 11 and was already involved in several rock bands during his high school years.
After graduating from high school in 1993, Maroulis enrolled at the Boston Conservatory, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In 2002, he received a diploma in vocal performance from the Berklee College of Music.
Career
In 2000, Maroulis performed in the musical "Suburban Dreams" and appeared on the dating reality show "Elimidate." He also provided the voice for a character in the animated film "Astro Boy" and worked as a theater actor. In 2003, after auditioning among 150 other candidates, Maroulis became the lead vocalist of the band "Pray for the Soul of Betty" and co-wrote their songs.
Maroulis gained significant recognition when he participated in the reality show "American Idol" in 2004, following the advice of his girlfriend. Although he faced criticism during the semi-finals and finals, he persevered and earned sixth place in the competition. His performances of "My Funny Valentine" and a rendition of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" were particularly praised.

In addition to his music career, Maroulis pursued acting and hosting opportunities. He auditioned for a role in the sitcom "Brooklyn" in 2005 and played the character of Sammy in the Broadway musical "The Wedding Singer" in 2006. He hosted several episodes of "Little Talent Show" on MTV and participated in the recording of the charitable album "Cure CD" in the same year. Maroulis also appeared in the musical "Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris" in 2007 and became a resident correspondent for "American Idol" on the television show "Good Day New York" on Fox. He also worked with Yahoo! as a correspondent. Additionally, Maroulis had a role in the CBS soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful."
Currently, Maroulis continues to perform and sing in the Broadway musical "Rock of Ages," which features rock hits from the '80s. In 2009, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his portrayal of Drew Bowie in the musical.
