Biography of American-Russian Soprano
Early Life and CareerA Russian singer with a lyrical-dramatic soprano voice, she was born in the United States. In 1901, she joined the female troupe known as "The Louisiana Amazon Guards" and performed at a Budapest cabaret. In 1904, she embarked on a tour with the troupe to Russia, where she later met and married pianist Boris Titts. This marriage prompted her to adopt a new stage name.
Training and Russian Residence
Deciding to stay in Russia, she sought vocal instruction in St. Petersburg under renowned педагоgue Elizaveta Zvantsiger. She subsequently studied with Maria Vladimirova and Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, refining her vocal abilities. Alongside her stage performances, she ventured into opera, notably performing the lead role in Verdi's "Aida" with the Kharkov Opera.
Civil War and Jazz Collaborations
During the Russian Civil War, she performed for Red Army soldiers. In the mid-1920s, she sang in Leningrad with Leopold Teplitsky's jazz band. In 1926, she joined an American jazz ensemble led by trombonist Frank Withers, featuring musicians like Sidney Bechet during their tour of Russia.
Film Role and Legacy
In 1945, she appeared in the film "Fifteen-Year-Old Captain" as the elderly African American woman Nan. Her remarkable career as a singer and performer left a lasting impact on the Russian and international music scene.
