Desperate Quadruple Amputee Bares All to Highlight Organ Donation
Corinne Hutton, a Scottish quadruple amputee in dire need of a double hand transplant, has resorted to an unconventional method to raise awareness about organ donation: posing nude.
Tragedy Strikes
Three years ago, Hutton lost both her hands and legs below the knees due to severe pneumonia and sepsis. Since then, she has been waiting for appropriate hands to match her blood type, skin tone, and size. However, despite the search, no matches have yet been found.
Hope from Leeds
In July 2016, Chris King became the first person in the UK to undergo a double hand transplant at Leeds General Infirmary. The surgeon who performed the transplant, Professor Simon Kay, is also overseeing Hutton's case and will operate once a suitable donor is found.
Challenges of Finding a Donor
The search for a donor compatible with Hutton is further complicated by her multiple blood transfusions during her illness. Professor Kay emphasizes the importance of organ donation, stating that it allows those who have lost their lives to help others in a meaningful way.
Inspiring Advocacy
Despite her challenges, Hutton has dedicated her life to raising awareness about amputation and the importance of organ and limb donation. She has walked a mile in prosthetic legs through central Glasgow to highlight "Finding Your Feet," a charity supporting amputees.
Raising Funds for a Cause
Hutton's unwavering spirit has led her to embark on extraordinary feats, from summiting Ben Nevis to zip-lining and cycling the Isle of Arran. Her efforts have raised over £250,000 for charity.
Naked Protest for Awareness
During Organ Donation Week, Hutton posed for nude photographs featuring her body outlined with the organs and tissues most commonly needed for transplants. The images were projected onto prominent London landmarks, including the National Portrait Gallery.
Call for Public Support
Hutton believes that her actions will increase awareness of organ and limb donation. She encourages everyone to consider giving their consent to become a donor, saying that "giving someone the chance at life, even after you're gone, is something everyone has the power to do."
National Health Service Response
Sally Johnson, NHS Blood and Transplant's Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation, commended Hutton's bold approach. She highlighted the urgent need for organ donors, as approximately three people die each day in the UK due to the lack of available organs.
Hope for Hutton's Future
Johnson expressed optimism that a suitable donor will be found for Hutton soon. She urged people to discuss organ donation with their families and consider the possibility of saving lives through this selfless act.
