Early Life and Education

Corneille was born in Liège, Belgium, in a family of Dutch workers. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.

Artistic Beginnings

Corneille began exhibiting his work in 1946. He was a founding member of the REFLEX movement and the COBRA group. His artistic style during this period was heavily influenced by Joan Miró and Paul Klee.

North African Influence

In 1949, Corneille discovered the art of North Africa, which he began collecting. From the mid-1950s, he incorporated ceramics into his artistic practice.

Paris and Abstraction

From 1951, Corneille lived in Paris. In the 1960s, he shifted his focus from abstraction towards figurative art.

Photography and Sculpture

In the 1970s, Corneille embraced photography. In the 1990s, he began creating colorful wooden sculptures.

International Recognition

Corneille's work was exhibited in the documenta exhibitions in Kassel (1959, 1964). His pieces are held in collections at the Stedelijk Museum and the Centre Pompidou.

Honors

Corneille was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
