Early Life and Playing Career
Craig Shakespeare was born on October 23, 1963, in Birmingham, England. He began his football journey with Walsall FC, where he played over 350 matches between 1981 and 1989. After a brief spell at Sheffield Wednesday, he went on to feature for West Bromwich Albion and Grimsby Town, making over 100 appearances for each club.
Coaching Career
Following his playing days, Shakespeare transitioned into coaching, starting out in West Bromwich's academy before joining Leicester City in 2008 as part of Nigel Pearson's and Claudio Ranieri's coaching staff. He also had a brief stint with Hull City alongside Pearson. In 2006, he briefly served as West Bromwich's caretaker manager for two days.
Leicester City Manager
Shakespeare's most notable achievement came in February 2017 when he took over as Leicester City's interim manager after the departure of Ranieri. In his first match in charge, the "Foxes" famously beat Liverpool 3-1. On March 12, 2017, he was appointed as the permanent manager.
However, Leicester's form under Shakespeare declined in the 2017/18 season, and he was dismissed from his post on October 17, 2017.
Legacy and Passing
Shakespeare sadly passed away on August 1, 2024, at the age of 60, after a year-long battle with cancer. He is remembered as a dedicated and passionate coach who helped guide Leicester City to one of their most memorable victories.
