Cynthia Munzer is an acclaimed American opera singer, known for her powerful mezzo-soprano voice. She has performed over 20 roles in 223 performances at the Metropolitan Opera, both at the Lincoln Center in New York City and on tours throughout the United States and Japan. Munzer is also a recipient of prestigious professional awards and is well-known to the American audience through weekly Saturday broadcasts from the MET and numerous recordings with renowned opera stars such as Luciano Pavarotti, Sherill Milnes, Placido Domingo, Joan Sutherland, Monserrat Caballé, Alfredo Kraus, Franco Corelli, Birgit Nilsson, and Renata Scotto.

Munzer's repertoire spans a wide range of roles, including Carmen, Cinderella, Azucena, Amneris, Octavian, Olga, Mrs. Quickly, and Herodias. She has performed in Italian, French, Russian, and German operas. As a guest soloist, Munzer has worked with numerous major opera houses and symphony orchestras. Munzer has been a sought-after guest artist at prestigious music festivals such as the Wolf Trap Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Carmel Bach Festival, Oregon Bach Festival, and Brattleboro Music Festival. She participated in the renowned concert commemorating the bicentennial of Mozart's death in New York City in 1992, as well as the MET Artists concert at the United Nations, the world premiere of Gian Carlo Menotti's "Mass," and the recording of a memorial album in honor of the victims of September 11. Munzer has also taught masterclasses worldwide, from American universities to Graz, Paris, Shanghai, Monte Carlo, and Guadalajara.

Education and Teaching Career

Born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, Munzer received her education at the University of Kansas, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Manhattan School of Music. Today, she serves as a faculty member at the Flora L. Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. She is also a vocal instructor at the Accademia Italiana di Canto in Tuscany and the International Lyric Academy in Lazio, Italy. Additionally, Munzer founded and leads the International Vocal Institute on the island of Hvar in Croatia. Many of her students have gone on to achieve great success in their own careers.
