Early Years and Formation
In late September 1987, Valentin Beresten (vocals, guitar) and Anatoly Zhideev (drums), previously of the group ZHELEZNII POTOK, founded the band that would later become known as DAI. Soon after, their classmates Yevgeny Vinogradov (guitar) and Alexei Leonov (bass) joined them.
The band's initial repertoire consisted of cover versions of hits by METALLICA, ACCEPT, and RAINBOW, as well as original songs written by Beresten. However, in the spring of 1988, Leonov and Beresten left the group.
Emergence of DAI
Leonid Bazhora (bass) and Vadim Kaposhenkov (guitar) joined the band, and it was at this time that the name DAI was adopted. Their first concert took place at the Moscow Technical University of Electronics and Mathematics in March, where all the members except Zhideev were enrolled.
Changes and First Recordings
In the spring of 1988, Zhideev departed, and Sergei Khusainov joined as the drummer in December. For a time, there was no permanent vocalist, with Bazhora handling most of the singing until Yevgeny took over in the summer of 1988.
In November 1989, Kaposhenkov left and was replaced by Konstantin Akimov, who eventually left four months later. In November 1990, DAI recorded their debut album, "Close Friends Of Death," with guest guitarist Boris Lobanov.
Recognition and Lineup Changes
Throughout the early 1990s, DAI performed extensively despite frequent lineup changes. Valery Alhimovic joined as a permanent guitarist in April 1991, and DAI received critical acclaim at the 5th Festival of Hopes of the Moscow Rock Laboratory.
Alhimovic's departure in December 1991 was followed by a series of short-term guitarists. In the winter of 1992-93, Khusainov left and was replaced by Alexander "AU" Konstantinov. Sergei Bogolyubsky later joined on guitar.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1995, DAI recorded the album "Vinen tem, chto zhiv" ("Guilty for Being Alive"), which was released on cassette and later on CD. A year later, "AU" departed, and the band entered a period of dormancy.
Eugene Vinogradov later opened the "DAI Records" studio, which hosted recordings for numerous Moscow bands. DAI released three albums during its existence:
