Car Thief Takes Children on Joyride
A 24-year-old car thief abducted a grandmother's car with two children inside. The heroic actions of an eight-year-old boy, Chance, from Ohio, enabled him and his 10-year-old sister, Skyler, to escape from the stolen vehicle.
Children Left Unattended
The children were left alone in the backseat of the car while Nita Kobarn attended to her daughter at a hospital in Middletown, Ohio. During this time, the suspect, Dalvir Singh, jumped into the driver's seat, started the car, and sped away from Atrium Medical Center.
Grandmother's Desperate Pursuit
Kobarn believed she had locked the doors, but as the keys were still inside, the security system kept them unlocked. Undeterred, Kobarn chased after the thief, desperately trying to rescue her grandchildren.
Children's Escape
Kobarn managed to open the driver's side door, but Singh slammed it shut. "When he slammed the door the second time, I saw he had a hold of Skyler," Nita told WCPO.
As the car swerved and accelerated, Singh was distracted by Kobarn and failed to notice eight-year-old Chance pulling his sister towards him and opening the back door. The children quickly jumped out of the vehicle and ran to their grandmother.
Boy's Bravery
"Chance is a hero," said Officer Connor Kirby of the Middletown Police Department. "It showed a lot of courage and how much he cares for his sister."
Suspect's Arrest
Singh was apprehended a few blocks from the scene of the crime. He was charged with kidnapping, car theft, and assault.
