Biography of Dan Hicks

Dan Hicks is an American country musician, singer, and poet-songwriter. He primarily works in the genres of cowboy folk, country swing, bluegrass, pop, and gypsy chants. He is best known for his hits "I Scare Myself" and "Canned Music".

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Dan Hicks was born in a small town called Little Rock, Arkansas. When he was five years old, his family moved to San Francisco, California. It was in a local school that he first became interested in music, playing the drums in the school orchestra and marching band. By the age of fourteen, he was already performing with local dance groups. He also had the opportunity to work with a local radio station, appearing on a daily fifteen-minute TV show called "Time Out for Teens". During his time at San Francisco State College, he continued his career as a radio broadcaster.

Rise to Fame

In 1959, Hicks became passionate about playing the guitar. Performing in coffeehouses in San Francisco, he quickly became an integral part of the local folk subculture. His songs stood out from others in the genre due to their subtle humor. One of his most popular songs during that time was "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away?".

The Charlatans and Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks

In 1965, Dan Hicks joined the band "The Charlatans" as a drummer. Three years later, he left the group and formed his own band, "Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks", with violinist David LaFlamme. However, LaFlamme soon left the band and was replaced by jazz violinist Sid Page. The group also included two vocalists, Sherry Snow and Christine Gancher, guitarist John Weber, and bassist Jamie Leopold. The band existed until 1971 and then underwent significant changes, including the replacement of vocalists and guitarist. In this new lineup, "Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks" released three albums.

Later Career

In 1992, as part of a global reunion program, Dan Hicks formed a new group called "The Acoustic Warriors", playing a mix of folk, swing, jazz, and country. This group recorded several albums, and eventually, Hicks began referring to them as "Hot Licks". In 1991, Hicks appeared in the film "Class Action" alongside Gene Hackman, where he played music in the background in one scene. He also appeared in various documentary films.
