Biography of Daniel Berbenk
Early Life and EducationDaniel Berbenk was born on July 27, 1961, in Manchester, Connecticut, USA. He completed his secondary education in Tolland, Connecticut in 1979. Berbenk then pursued a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1985. He furthered his education by earning a Master's degree in Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1990.
Coast Guard Service
Berbenk began his service in the United States Coast Guard in 1985. As a pilot, he flew various types of helicopters, including the HH-60J 'Jayhawk' and HH-3F 'Pelican'. He accumulated over 3000 flight hours, with 1800 hours dedicated to patrols. He actively participated in more than 300 search and rescue operations.
Space Career
In April 1996, Berbenk joined the NASA astronaut corps. From August 1996 to August 1998, he completed the general astronaut training program at NASA Johnson Space Center.
Space Missions
Berbenk's first spaceflight was from September 8 to September 20, 2000, as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle "Atlantis" for the STS-106 mission. The mission lasted 11 days, 19 hours, 11 minutes, and 1 second. The primary objective of the mission was to deliver supplies to the International Space Station and prepare it for manned operations.
Awards and Interests
Berbenk has been honored with medals from the United States Air Force, United States Coast Guard, and NASA, including the NASA "Space Flight" medal in 2000. He is married and has two children. In his free time, he enjoys activities such as running, skiing, swimming, playing the guitar, and amateur astronomy.
