Daniel Guilet: French-American Violinist of Russian Origin
Early Life and EducationDaniel Guilet was born in Russia and immigrated to Paris with his family before his first birthday. He studied at the Paris Conservatory under Georges Enescu and Guillaume Remy.
Concert Career and the Calvet Quartet
In the 1920s, Guilet began performing as a soloist, collaborating with the likes of Maurice Ravel. However, he gained significant recognition as the second violinist of the Calvet Quartet. Under Guilet's guidance, the Calvet Quartet, led by Joseph Calvet, became prominent in French quartet performance.
Emigration to the USA and the Guilet Quartet
In 1940, the Calvet Quartet disbanded, and Guilet emigrated to the United States in 1941. He founded the Guilet Quartet and joined the NBC Symphony Orchestra in 1942. In 1951, he became the orchestra's concertmaster, a position he retained after the orchestra evolved into Symphony of the Air in 1954.
The Beaux Arts Trio and Legacy
Guilet's most notable achievement in America was the establishment of the Beaux Arts Trio in 1955. The trio, which featured Guilet on violin, became one of the most acclaimed instrumental ensembles in the United States. Guilet remained with the trio until 1969, leaving behind a lasting legacy as an exceptional violinist and chamber musician.
