Shirley Caesar began singing and performing at the age of ten, in the company of her family and friends. Her professional career started at the age of 18 when she befriended African-American gospel singer Albertina Walker, who became her mentor. Caesar joined the popular gospel group "The Caravans" and remained with them from 1958 to 1966. After leaving the group, she embarked on a solo career and made a name for herself in the world of gospel music.
