Biography of Daniel Palmer
Daniel David Palmer, the founder of modern chiropractic methodology, was born on March 7, 1845, and passed away on October 20, 1913. He was born in a suburb of Toronto, Canada, and spent his childhood in the province. At the age of 12, he moved to the United States with his family.
Early Careers
In his youth, Daniel tried various professions, including beekeeper, laborer, and builder. He later tried his hand at being a schoolteacher and even owned his own grocery store. Over time, Palmer began to contemplate the meaning of life and often pondered philosophical topics. He eventually started exploring non-traditional treatments and believed that individuals could heal themselves from serious illnesses through the power of their own will and "a little bit of magic." Palmer considered this magic to be magnetic waves and other natural phenomena.
Focus on Magnetotherapy
In the 1880s, Daniel Palmer became serious about magnetotherapy. He began developing his own methodologies, which sometimes led to tremendous results. During his study of non-traditional methods, he read numerous books on medicine, physiology, and human anatomy.
Development of Chiropractic
Palmer started practicing in Davenport, Iowa, where he opened a clinic to demonstrate the healing power of his magnets. During his time in Davenport, Palmer successfully cured a person who was deaf and had a hunchback. He believed that these conditions were connected, and after a session of procedures, the deaf patient regained their hearing. This case marked the beginning of chiropractic as a field. Palmer gained like-minded individuals and followers who dedicated their efforts to the development of this innovative medical discipline.
Establishment of Chiropractic School
In 1897, Palmer founded the first chiropractic school. In 1902, the institution graduated its first specialists in the field. However, Daniel Palmer's career faced challenges in 1906 when he was charged with practicing medicine without a proper license. He was faced with a hefty fine or imprisonment. With no money, Palmer had to serve his sentence, but local authorities intervened and collected the necessary funds to secure his release.
Continued Contributions in Chiropractic
Despite the setback, Dr. Palmer continued to actively contribute to the development of chiropractic. He opened several medical schools dedicated to the study of this treatment methodology.
