Biography of Daniel Sennert

German Philosopher and Professor of Medicine

Daniel Sennert was a renowned German philosopher and professor of medicine in Wittenberg during his time. He is best known for his works "Epitome scientiae naturalis" (Wittenberg, 1618) and "Hypomnemata physica" (Frankfurt, 1635). His complete works, "Opera omnia," were published in 1645 in Venice.

Contribution to Atomism and Philosophy

In his fight against Aristotelian physics and metaphysics, which marked the beginning of a new philosophy, Sennert embraced ancient atomism even before Gassendi. He proposed four types of elemental atoms, distinguishing them from atom-like particles that nature allows to be divided to a certain extent, giving rise to complex bodies. Sennert believed that all atoms possess inherent forms, and all changes occur based on the movement of atoms or particles. He attributed the union of atoms to the specific forms in which God created them. Sennert vehemently denied the notion of blind chance, which would reduce atoms and form individual bodies.
