Saint Daniel the Stylite
Early Life and VocationBorn in Mesopotamia to Christian parents Elias and Martha, the future Saint Daniel's birth was a divine gift after his mother's fervent prayers. At his baptism, he was named after the prophet Daniel, a sign of his destiny.
Monastic Life and Desire for Asceticism
At the age of twelve, Daniel left home to become a monastic послушник. Inspired by Saint Simeon Stylite, he yearned to emulate his extreme asceticism by living on a pillar.
Asceticism on a Pillar
With Saint Simeon's blessing, Daniel settled near Constantinople, where he faced numerous demonic temptations. Undeterred, he erected a pillar and spent over thirty years living in extreme physical and spiritual privation.
Miracles and Pilgrimage
Renowned for his miracles and healing powers, Daniel's hermitage attracted many pilgrims seeking his guidance. His reputation spread far and wide, even reaching the ears of the Patriarch of Constantinople.
Ordination and Legacy
Despite his secluded existence, Daniel was ordained a priest by the Patriarch. Upon his death in 489 or 490, he left behind a legacy of extreme asceticism and spiritual achievement.
Saint Daniel's Monastery in Moscow
One of the oldest monasteries in Moscow is dedicated to Saint Daniel the Stylite. Founded in the 13th century, it honors his memory and continues to serve as a place of pilgrimage and devotion.
