Early Life and Education

Born into a humble peasant family, Maria Bertilla Boscardin received a basic education while working as a servant in a neighbor's house. At the age of 12, she joined the Daughters of Mary Catholic movement.

Religious Calling

Inspired by her deep faith, Maria decided to devote her life to serving God at the age of 15. In 1904, she entered the convent accompanied by her father. She took the name Maria Bertilla.

Nursing Service

After her first year as a novice, Maria Bertilla was sent to the municipal hospital in Treviso as a dish-washer. Beyond her kitchen duties, she lovingly cared for children suffering from diphtheria. During air raids, she also provided care to the wounded.

Wartime Hospital Service

In 1918, Maria Bertilla was assigned to a military hospital in the province of Como. For 20 years, she served as a dedicated nurse, leaving an enduring legacy among patients and doctors alike.

Illness and Demise

In early 1922, Maria Bertilla was diagnosed with a terminal illness. She passed away peacefully on October 16, 1922. Her unwavering faith and compassionate service inspired countless individuals.

Canonization and Legacy

In 1961, Maria Bertilla Boscardin was canonized by Pope Pius XII. Her feast day is celebrated on October 16. She is revered as a saint of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, a role model for nurses, and a testament to the power of love and faith.
