Early Life and Family

Daniil Zhukovsky was born into a family of intellectuals. His mother, A. Gertsik, was a poetess, while his father, D.E. Zhukovsky, was a scientist, translator, publisher of philosophical literature, and editor of the journal "Questions of Life." After his mother's death in 1925, the family faced hardships. His father was arrested, and his younger brother was taken into care by acquaintances. Daniil himself enrolled in the Crimean Pedagogical Institute, majoring in physics and mathematics.

Academic and Literary Pursuits

During his time at the Crimean Pedagogical Institute, Daniil's interests in mathematics, poetry, and the theory of verse developed. In 1931-1934, the family reunited in Ivanovo, where Daniil taught mathematics and physics to workers while pursuing his mathematical studies at Moscow State University through correspondence.

Inner Struggles and Social Unrest

Surviving letters from the Gerzyk-Zhukovsky family archive reveal Daniil's sensitive and vulnerable nature. He struggled with the social and political turmoil of the time, expressing his frustration and despair in letters to his aunt. The Stalinist repressions left an indelible mark on him, leading to his arrest and eventual execution.

Political Persecution and Execution

On June 1, 1936, Daniil Zhukovsky was arrested on charges of possessing "counter-revolutionary poems" by Voloshin and making negative comments about Soviet life. Despite being sentenced to five years, he faced further charges and a new sentence signed by a special troika on February 15, 1938. It is believed that he was executed the following day, coinciding with his mother's birthday.

Legacy and Influences

Daniil Zhukovsky's untimely death cut short a promising literary and academic career. His friendship with notable figures such as Voloshin, Bryusov, Shestov, Berdyaev, Ilyin, S. Bulgakov, Tsvetaeva, Remizov, and Vyacheslav Ivanov left a lasting impact on his intellectual development.
