Early Life and Football Career
Marko Dončić, a Serbian footballer, began his football journey at FK Beograd in Belgrade. After playing for FK Rudar (Ljubljana) in the Yugoslav Second League, he spent several years in lower divisions with FK Napredak, FK Čukarički, and FK Beograd.
Maltese League Success
In 1994, Dončić joined Maltese club Valletta FC, where he spent three seasons. He became the Maltese Premier League's top scorer in the 1996/97 season with 32 goals.
International Career
Dončić played for PFC Lokomotiv Sofia in Bulgaria and CD Imortal in Portugal's second division. With Lokomotiv, he finished as the league's third-highest scorer in 1997/98. He returned to Malta in 2001 and joined Sliema Wanderers FC, winning three league titles and finishing as the league's top scorer twice.
Coaching Career
Upon retiring at age 37, Dončić transitioned to coaching. He worked with Maltese clubs and served as assistant manager to Dragan Okuka at Lokomotiv Sofia and Kavala FC. He also coached in Bahrain and Greece.
Return to Valletta and Final Farewell
Dončić returned to Valletta FC in 2017, leading them to a league and cup double in the 2017/18 season. In 2018/19, the club won the title again, but Dončić left a month before the end of the season.
Death and Legacy
In 2023, Dončić became manager of PFC Lokomotiv Sofia but resigned a week before his untimely death from a heart attack on May 1, 2024, at the age of 55. He is fondly remembered as one of the most prolific strikers in Maltese Premier League history.
