Early Life and Career Change
Dar Salim, a Danish actor of Iraqi descent, was born in Baghdad on August 18, 1977. He grew up with a younger brother, Ulaa. After fleeing Iraq a year after Salim's birth, the family settled near Copenhagen in the mid-1980s.
Aviation and the Acting Dream
As a teenager, Salim was inspired to pursue karate after watching "The Karate Kid" and eventually earned a black belt. After completing school, he served in the Danish Royal Guard and aspired to become a pilot. To fund his training, Salim worked as a teacher, loader, bartender, and fitness instructor.
In 2002, Salim became a licensed commercial pilot, but after the 9/11 attacks, he faced hiring challenges due to increased scrutiny of pilots of Arab descent. He took on odd jobs until landing a position with an airline that later went bankrupt. Through connections, he found another piloting position but left the aviation industry in the midst of the financial crisis to pursue acting.
Acting Career
Salim, despite having no formal training or industry connections, sensed his potential as an actor. Initially, he balanced acting with his piloting career. While in New York and London, he took acting classes and made occasional appearances on the Danish stage.
His break came in 2011 as Qhono, a Dothraki rider in the first season of "Game of Thrones." He also appeared in Ridley Scott's biblical epic "Exodus: Gods and Kings."
Notable Roles and Series
Salim played a substantial role in the second season of the crime drama "The Bridge," and he starred in the Danish action film "Underverden" and the psychological thriller "Until We Fall." He also took on a leading role in the drama "Love Is for Adults."
Personal Life
Salim is the father of Zidane Storm Salim, born in 2011, whose mother is producer Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen. He is open to love and relationships, having overcome his shyness over time. He shares photos of his son on social media, expressing his joy as a father and his hopes for future children.
"The Interpreter" and Beyond
In 2023, Salim co-starred with Jake Gyllenhaal in Guy Ritchie's action thriller "The Interpreter." He prepared extensively for the role, consulting with military acquaintances and language tutors.
The film's director, Guy Ritchie, praised Salim's performance, and co-star Jake Gyllenhaal publicly acknowledged him on social media.
