An Argentine Footballer of Croatian DescentDario Cvitanich is an Argentine footballer of Croatian descent, who currently plays as a forward for the Dutch club, Ajax. He began his football career at the Argentine club Banfield.
Early Career
At the age of 18, Dario made his debut for Banfield's first team on October 20, 2003, in a match against "Olimpo de Bahía Blanca," which ended in a 3-1 defeat for Banfield. On April 27, 2007, Dario scored three goals against "Newell's Old Boys." In the 2007 Copa Libertadores, Dario scored two goals for Banfield. In his final season with Banfield, Cvitanich played 16 matches in the Clausura 2008 tournament.
Move to Ajax
At the end of the 2007/08 season, Dario transferred to the Dutch club, Ajax. Despite being born in Argentina, Dario's parents have Croatian origins. After careful consideration, he ultimately decided to represent the Croatian national team. However, he has not yet been called up to the Croatian national team.
Regulations and Controversies
In 2009, based on the decision of the highest football authorities, Dario was not allowed to play for the Croatian national team, as his great-grandfather was born in the Balkans. According to the regulations, the birth of a grandparent is considered the maximum requirement for eligibility to play for a particular national team. However, discussions on this matter are likely to continue, especially since Cvitanich stated that he would decline a call-up to the Argentine national team.
