Leandro Grimi: Argentine Defender
Leandro Grimi is an Argentine professional footballer who played as a defender. He began his career in Argentina with Deportivo Español before moving to Italy to play for Roma in 2002.
Early Career in Italy
At Roma, Grimi struggled to establish himself as a regular starter and was sent on loan to Siena for the 2003-04 season. He impressed during his time at Siena and was brought back to Roma. In 2004, he was named Serie A's Best Defender.
Move to France and Trouble
In 2006, Grimi transferred to Monaco in France, where he quickly became a key player in the defense. However, problems with his passport forced him to leave Monaco in 2009, and he joined Hertha Berlin in Germany.
Injury and Departure from Germany
After only five appearances for Hertha, Grimi suffered a cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season. He left Hertha in August 2009 and joined Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.
International Career and Infamy
Grimi made his international debut for Argentina in 2000 and earned 17 caps for his country. He gained notoriety at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany after receiving a red card in the quarterfinal against Germany. It was the first time a player had ever been sent off in a World Cup match without participating in the game. As a result, Grimi was fined 10,000 Swiss francs and suspended for four matches.
