Biography of Dave Stewart
Dave Stewart is a British keyboardist, vocalist, and guitarist, best known for his work with the band "Eurythmics". Born on December 30, 1950, in Waterloo, London, Dave discovered his musical talent at an early age, particularly in playing the piano. As a teenager, he switched to playing the electric guitar, which was a more popular instrument in the mid-1960s.
Early Musical Career
Dave's first band as a guitarist was a local group called "Southsiders". By 1967, he had formed his own band called "Uriel". It is important to note that Dave Stewart, the keyboardist and vocalist, is not to be confused with David A. Stewart, the guitarist of "Eurythmics". The members of Dave's band "Uriel" included his school friends Steve Hillage (guitar), Clive Brooks (drums), Mont Campbell (bass, vocals), and Dave himself on keyboards. When Hillage left the band to attend university, they changed their name to the more obscure "Egg". In 1970, they signed a record deal with the "Deram" label and released two albums: "Egg" in 1970 and "The Polite Force" in 1971. They briefly reunited in 1974 to record their third album, "The Civil Surface", under the "Virgin" label. Interestingly, an earlier session recorded by the band when they were still called "Uriel", featuring Hillage, was released in 1970 under the name "Arzachel" to avoid issues with the recording studio. Today, this album is highly sought after in the British psychedelic music market.
Hatfield and the North
Later on, Stewart formed the progressive rock supergroup "Hatfield and the North". The band included drummer Pip Pyle (from "Gong"), guitarist Phil Miller ("Matching Mole"), and bassist Richard Sinclair ("Caravan"). The band's eccentric jazz passages were complemented by the vocals of three Canterbury singers: Amanda Parsons, Ann Rosenthal, and Barbara Gaskin, who happened to be Stewart's girlfriend at the time and a member of the "Northettes" group.
Later Career and Contributions
In addition to his work with various bands, Dave Stewart has also made significant contributions as a musician and author. He has written two instructional books, "The Musician's Guide to Reading and Writing Music" and "Inside the Music". In 1984, Stewart and his wife Gaskin recorded an album titled "Neil's Heavy Concept Album" for the British comedy series "The Young Ones". The album, which included several hit singles, gained incredible popularity in the United Kingdom.
