Early Life and Career

Peter Maffay was born Peter Alexander Makka on August 30, 1949, in Brasov, Romania. The son of a Transylvanian Saxon, Maffay moved to West Germany with his family at the age of 14. There, he formed his first band, "The Dukes." After completing his education and working briefly for the company "Chemigraphics," Maffay began making a living playing in clubs.

Breakthrough Success

Maffay's career took off after the release of his debut single, "Du." The song became a major hit in Germany in 1970, propelling him to instant fame. His album "Steppenwolf" (1979) sold over 1.6 million copies, becoming the best-selling longplay in Germany at the time. His subsequent release, "Revanche" (1980), broke further records, selling over 2.1 million copies.

"Tabaluga" and Concert Success

Maffay created a series of fairy tales about a little green dragon named Tabaluga. These stories were featured on five albums and adapted into a musical. Maffay embarked on a concert tour of "Tabaluga & Lilli," resulting in a live album, DVD, and television broadcasts. The project involved guest artists such as Alexis, Nino de Angelo, Rufus Beck, and Carl Carlton.

Collaborations and Other Projects

In 1998, Maffay recorded an album, "Begegnungen," featuring collaborations with artists from around the world, including aboriginal singers and musicians from Israel. He also worked with "Queen of German Rock" Julia Neigel, who wrote two successful singles for him: "Freiheit die ich meine" and "Siehst Du die Sonne."

Film and Acting

Maffay ventured into acting, starring in Peter Patzak's crime drama "Der Joker" (1986). He also appeared in the thriller "Der Eisbär" (1998) with Til Schweiger and the television drama "Gefangen im Jemen" (1999).

Activism and Personal Life

Maffay is politically active, sometimes reflecting his views in his music. He is a supporter of the German "Peace Movement." In 2005, he performed for troops serving with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. An avid motorcyclist, Maffay survived a serious accident involving a Harley Davidson in 1972. He has also ridden off-road motorcycles across the Sahara Desert several times.

Maffay has been married four times and has a son. He lives with his family on a farm on the Spanish island of Majorca. There, he has established a ranch where children with disabilities can enjoy free two-week vacations to aid in their recovery. In 2011, Maffay was awarded the prestigious Steiger Award.
