Daevid Allen: A Psychedelic Pioneer
Early Influences and ParisGrowing up in Melbourne, Australia, Daevid Allen was inspired by the writings of the Beat Generation. In 1960, he journeyed to Paris, where he immersed himself in the vibrant culture of the Beat Hotel. Encounters with musicians like Terry Riley and writers like William Burroughs fueled his interest in jazz and experimental music.
Soft Machine
Allen moved to England in the mid-1960s. He met and collaborated with Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, and Mike Ratledge, forming the influential psychedelic rock band Soft Machine. After a successful European tour, Allen was denied re-entry to the UK due to a visa issue.
Gong and Political Activism
In Paris, Allen joined the protests of May 1968. He distributed plush toys and recited poetry, earning the admiration of some but also the mockery of his fellow protesters. Seeking refuge from the police, he and his partner Gilly Smith traveled to the Spanish island of Majorca. There, he recorded the debut album of Gong, "Magick Brother, Mystick Sister."
The Rise of Gong
Gong achieved international recognition with the release of their album "Camembert Electrique" in 1971. The band became an experimental collective, incorporating elements of space rock, jazz, and psychedelia. Allen was a charismatic frontman, known for his flamboyant stage presence and whimsical lyrics.
Planet Gong and Later Projects
In the 1980s, Allen left Gong and formed Planet Gong and New York Gong. He continued to explore experimental music in various projects, including Brainville, Ex, and The Magic Brothers. In 1981, he returned to Australia, settling in Byron Bay.
Later Career
In later years, Allen focused on theater and poetry. He collaborated with artist David Tolley and performed in the improvisational group Guru and Zero. He also reunited with his son Orlando and toured with the project you’N’gong.
Legacy
Daevid Allen was a visionary musician and a pioneer of psychedelic rock. He played a pivotal role in the development of several influential bands, including Soft Machine and Gong. His experimental spirit and imaginative lyrics continue to inspire musicians and fans around the world.
