Dastmalchian's breakthrough came in 2013 when he was cast by Denis Villeneuve in the detective thriller "Prisoners." His performance as one of the suspects in the kidnapping of two young girls was highly praised by critics, with Time magazine describing it as "superb with a dash of psychopathy."
Villeneuve continued to collaborate with Dastmalchian, casting him in "Blade Runner 2049" (2017) and "Dune" (2021). It received critical acclaim and won awards at the Virginia Film Festival and South by Southwest.
