Early Life and Education

Born into a working-class family, David Graeber's father, a former member of the Young Communist League of the USA, fought alongside the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. Graeber graduated from Purchase College with a bachelor's degree before pursuing his master's and doctorate under the supervision of Marshall Sahlins at the University of Chicago. There, he received a Fulbright scholarship and conducted research on the Malagasy people in Madagascar.

Academic Career

After completing his doctorate, Graeber taught anthropology at Yale University from 1998 to 2007 and at the University of London from 2007 to 2013. In 2013, he became a professor of anthropology at the London School of Economics.

Activism and Influence

Graeber was a prominent figure in the Occupy Wall Street movement and other political actions. He is often credited with coining the slogan "We are the 99 percent." As a member of the Industrial Workers of the World union, his book "Debt: The First 5000 Years" (2011) explored the history and impact of debt in human societies and was translated into over ten languages.
