Life and Early Career

David Kabua, the ninth President of the Marshall Islands, was born as the son of founding president Amata Kabua and his wife Emlain Kabua. His initial entry into government came in 2012 when he was appointed Minister of Health. In 2013, he retained his post as Minister of Health and was also appointed the position of Minister of Internal Affairs in 2014.

Presidency

On January 6, 2020, the Legislative Assembly of the Marshall Islands elected Kabua as president with 20 votes in favor and one abstention. His victory marked a shift in leadership, replacing Hilda Heine who had sought a second term.

Presidential Focus

As president, Kabua has prioritized addressing the concerns of climate change. He has actively engaged in negotiations with the United States to extend the Compact of Free Association funding agreement, which is set to expire in 2023. Additionally, the issues surrounding the contaminated island of Runit have been a focus of his presidency.
