Political Career

Municipal Councillor and Mayor of Reykjavík

In 1974, Davíð Oddsson embarked on his political career as a member of the Reykjavík Municipal Council. From 1982 to 1991, he served as the mayor of Iceland's capital city.

Leader of the Independence Party

In 1989, Oddsson became vice-chairman of the Independence Party (IP). Two years later, he rose to the position of party chairman. Under his leadership, the IP emerged victorious in the 1991 parliamentary elections.

Prime Minister of Iceland

Following the IP's election triumph, Oddsson became Prime Minister of Iceland in 1991. He formed a coalition government with the Social Democratic Party, which was later joined by the Progressive Party in 1995. Oddsson served as Prime Minister for an impressive 13 years until his resignation in 2004.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Governor of the Central Bank

Upon stepping down as Prime Minister, Oddsson assumed the role of Minister of Foreign Affairs. He also became the chairman of the board of governors of the Central Bank of Iceland.

Retirement and Recognition

Editor of Morgunblaðið

In 2009, Oddsson retired from politics and took on the position of editor of the Icelandic newspaper Morgunblaðið.

Awards and Recognition

Oddsson's contributions to Icelandic society were recognized with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit (Norway).
