American Baritone David Bispham
Early Life and TrainingDavid Bispham was born into a Quaker family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Despite lacking formal musical training, he displayed early talent for singing and performed in his hometown. In 1885, he traveled to Europe to pursue further studies, training under Luigi Vannuccini in Florence and Francesco Lamperti in Milan.
European Debut
In 1891, Bispham successfully auditioned against nearly 50 candidates to sing the lead role of the Duc de Longueville in the London premiere of André Messager's opera "The Basoche." His performance earned critical acclaim, leading to a role as Kurnewal in Richard Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" at Drury Lane Theatre the following year.
Metropolitan Opera Years
Bispham returned to the United States in 1896 and made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera on November 18th. He performed primarily in Wagnerian roles at the renowned New York opera house until 1903.
Recital Career
After leaving the Metropolitan Opera, Bispham transitioned to chamber concerts. He specialized in songs by Beethoven, Schubert, and Schumann, advocating for their performance in English translation. Bispham believed that singing should be in the audience's native language.
Return to Opera
In 1916, Bispham returned to the opera stage in a private production of Mozart's "The Impresario" in English. The success of this performance led him to continue performing operatic roles for the remainder of his life.
Legacy
David Bispham was a renowned baritone whose contributions to the opera and concert worlds were significant. In his memory, the Bispham Memorial Medal is awarded to American opera composers.
