Early Life and Career
Dayana Yastremska was born on May 15, 2000, in Odessa, Ukraine. She began playing tennis at the age of five, introduced to the sport by her grandfather, Ivan Yastremsky, a former police chief. Her first coaches were Eduard Makarov, Viktoria and Valeriy Kutuzoy, and Jean-Rene Lisnar. At the age of seven, she won her first junior title.
Junior Success
Yastremska had significant success as a junior player. In 2012, she placed second in the prestigious Junior Orange Bowl tournament in the United States. In 2015, she partnered with Anastasiya Zarytska to win the second-category tournament in Budajorsi, Hungary. She then won the Budapest tournament in singles.
In 2016, Yastremska reached the final of the junior Australian Open in doubles and the semifinals of the Porto Alegre tournament in Brazil. At Wimbledon, she advanced to the junior singles final but lost to Anastasiya Potapova.
WTA Debut and First Title (2016-2018)
Yastremska made her professional tennis debut on February 25, 2015, at an ITF tournament in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. She won her first adult title in 2016 at a tournament in Campinas, Brazil.
In 2017, Yastremska recorded several doubles victories, partnering with Vera Lapko, Olesya Pervushina, and Anastasia Potapova. She also won two ITF tournament singles titles in Dungakeszi and Rome.
In 2018, Yastremska made her debut at the US Open, where she lost in the first round. She then captured her first WTA title at the Hong Kong Tennis Open, becoming the youngest Ukrainian to win a WTA title at the age of 18 years and 4 months.
Breakthrough Season (2019)
Yastremska began 2019 with a third-round finish at the Australian Open, where she lost to Serena Williams. She then won her second WTA title at the Thailand Open.
At Wimbledon, Yastremska reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time, defeating Sofia Kenin in the process. She lost in the third round of the US Open to compatriot Elina Svitolina.
