End-Stage Renal Failure
Debbie's health struggles began the previous year with unexplained dizziness and confusion. A hospital visit revealed the devastating diagnosis: end-stage renal failure. Nearly 660,000 Americans suffer from kidney failure, with 468,000 relying on life-sustaining dialysis. Debbie began dialysis on Christmas Eve, her life confined to hospital walls.
Waiting for a Transplant
Kidney transplants have an average wait time of 3-5 years, with approximately 20 people dying each day while waiting for an organ. Debbie was facing the prospect of being one of those lives lost. "Her doctor said it would be about three years before she got one," said Casey. "But my mom doesn't have three years."
A Perfect Match
Mother and daughter were overwhelmed with emotion when Casey's kidney was deemed a perfect match. Doctors assured them that a transplant from a living donor would provide the best long-term outcomes. "You're getting not only a working kidney, but you're getting a kidney that's going to last," said Dr. Sean Comer, who harvested Casey's kidney.
A New Life
The surgery was a success, and both Debbie and her daughter are thriving. "She's officially off the hook for every Mother's Day, birthday, and Christmas gift," said a grateful Harker. "She gave me my life back."
