Dorothy Karolyn "Dede" Allen was born on December 3, 1923, in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. In her obituary, the Los Angeles Times incorrectly stated that Allen was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her mother was an actress, and her father worked for the oldest chemical and polymer company in the United States, Union Carbide.

Early Career

Allen paved her way up in the film industry, starting as a sound librarian and assistant editor at Columbia Pictures. She worked on editing commercials and industrial films before becoming a full-fledged film editor. At the age of 16, Allen received her first significant assignment - editing the 1959 film "Odds Against Tomorrow." She worked closely with film director Robert Wise, who encouraged Allen to always be brave and experiment with editing.

Style and Contributions

With relatively little experience, Allen decided to follow the path of Dadaism in cinema, perhaps similar to the early career of René Clair. Alternatively, her irrational approach was reminiscent of the road taken by the representatives of the French New Wave. Either way, the experimentalist Allen was the first to use audio dubbing and emotionally abrupt editing transitions in her work. These stylistic tricks brought a unique energy and realism to the characters, which were not part of the classical Hollywood editing methodology.

Allen was renowned as the "doctor of editing" in the major American film studios and one of the greatest editors of independent cinema. Her most famous works include editing classic films such as "Dog Day Afternoon," "The Hustler," "Reds," and "Bonnie and Clyde." Throughout her career, Allen collaborated with numerous directors, including Arthur Penn, Sidney Lumet, Robert Wise, Elia Kazan, and George Roy Hill. She also served on the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Personal Life and Legacy

Allen was married to film director Stephen Fleischman. She passed away on April 17, 2010, in Los Angeles, California, due to a stroke. She left behind a daughter, Rame Ward, and a son, Tom Fleischman. Eileen Kowalski noted, "In fact, many great editors were women: Dede Allen, Verna Fields, Thelma Schoonmaker, Anne V.
