Early Life and Education
Deepak Chopra, an Indian-American physician and author, was born in New Delhi, India. His father, Krishna Chopra, was a cardiologist who served as a chaplain in a local hospital and as a lieutenant in the British Indian Army. Chopra's grandfather practiced Ayurveda, a traditional Indian system of medicine.
Chopra received his early education at St. Columba's School in New Delhi and later graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He completed his clinical training and residency at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, New Jersey, Lahey Clinic Hospital in Burlington, Massachusetts, and the University of Virginia Hospital. Upon completing his residency, Chopra became board-certified in internal medicine and endocrinology.
Career
After his residency, Chopra established his medical practice in Massachusetts. In 1993, he relocated his family to La Jolla, California. In 1996, Chopra co-founded the Chopra Center for Well-being with neuroendocrinologist David Simon. The center incorporates Ayurveda and other alternative health practices.
Chopra has authored numerous books on spirituality and alternative medicine. His writings have been influenced by the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti, Vedanta, and the Bhagavad Gita. He has also been recognized as one of the 100 most spiritually influential living people by Watkins' Mind Body Spirit magazine in 2012.
Criticism
Chopra's approach to medicine has been met with criticism. Skeptics argue that it diverts people from effective treatments. In 1998, Chopra was awarded the Ig Nobel Prize in physics for his application of quantum physics to life, liberty, and economic well-being.
Biologist Jerry Coyne has accused Chopra of profiting from pseudoscience and criticized his views as anti-science. Chopra has defended his work, stating that skeptics have edited his Wikipedia page to discredit his views.
Personal Life
Chopra is married to Rita Chopra. They have two children, Gautam and Mallika. His younger brother, Sanjiv, is a professor of medicine and dean of continuing medical education at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
