Childhood and Upbringing

Deiveson Alcantara Figueiredo was born on December 18, 1987, in the small Brazilian municipality of Soure, located on Marajó Island. Growing up in a working-class family, Figueiredo became accustomed to hard physical labor. His childhood was spent on his father's cattle farm, where he learned to handle the animals from a young age. Despite his fears, his father instilled in him the importance of bravery.

Early Combat Sports

From a young age, Figueiredo embraced the traditional wrestling style of Marajóara, popular on Marajó Island. After moving to Belém, he began practicing capoeira at school. At the age of 16, he took up Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai.

Mixed Martial Arts Career

Influenced by fellow Brazilian fighter Yuri Alcântara, Figueiredo transitioned to mixed martial arts at 18. However, the path to stardom was not without its challenges. Figueiredo worked various jobs, including as a barber, bricklayer, and sushi chef, before establishing himself in the sport.

In 2012, at the age of 25, Figueiredo made his professional debut at Knock Out Combat Icoaraci, winning via first-round armbar. Impressing with his skillful and agile fighting style, he amassed an 11-0 record in regional promotions.

UFC Debut

Figueiredo's impressive performances caught the attention of the UFC, and he made his promotional debut in June 2017. Despite a tough first fight, he secured a TKO victory over Mexican opponent Marco Beltrán. In his next fight, he earned a split decision win over Jared Brooks.

In 2018, Figueiredo won two more fights via TKO. In 2019, he faced compatriot Jussier Formiga but lost by decision, snapping his winning streak.

UFC Flyweight Champion

Figueiredo's first shot at the UFC Flyweight Championship came in February 2020 against Joseph Benavidez. However, despite winning the fight by knockout, he failed the weigh-in and was ineligible for the title. Five months later, he faced Benavidez again, this time dominating the fight and submitting him moments before the end of the first round. Figueiredo thus became the UFC Flyweight Champion.

He successfully defended his belt in November 2020 against Alex Perez and fought Brandon Moreno three weeks later. The latter used an illegal technique in a desperate attempt to win, resulting in a majority draw.

In a rematch at UFC 263, Figueiredo lost to Moreno and relinquished his championship.

Personal Life

Figueiredo is a dedicated family man, married to Bruna Moraes. They have a son, Benicio, born in 2019. Figueiredo also raised Bruna's daughter from a previous relationship as his own. He shares his love and appreciation for his family on social media.

Fight Style

Deiveson Figueiredo is known for his aggressive striking and submission prowess. His mastery of Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu allows him to control the tempo and finish fights early. With high fight IQ, he often dictates his opponents' strategies and emerges victorious.

Current Status

In January 2022, Figueiredo regained the championship in a trilogy fight with Moreno. In March 2022, he accused Moreno's team of racism, leading to a potential fourth encounter between the two fighters.
