Delbert Dowenbah - A WWII Veteran
Delbert Dowenbah, a Rockford, Alaska resident, served as a signalman on a cargo ship during World War II. His ship was part of the famous convoy that supplied aid to the Soviet Union.
Receiving the Order of Ushakov
In 2012, Dowenbah received the Russian Order of Ushakov, a prestigious medal that recognizes the courage and bravery of naval personnel. The medal was presented in recognition of his service during the war.
Early Life and Service
Dowenbah enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and served from 1942 to 1946. As a signalman, he stood on the bridge and communicated with other ships using flags. He still remembers the Morse code commands with remarkable clarity.
Dangerous Missions
Dowenbah's missions under constant bombardment by German submarines were akin to suicide missions. Despite the risks, he and his fellow sailors performed their duties with unwavering resolve.
A Meaningful Honor
"After 70 long years, it's nice that the Russians have finally remembered what we did," said Dowenbah about receiving the Order of Ushakov. He values the medal greatly, but remains humble.
A Solemn Remembrance
Dowenbah believes that the true heroes of World War II are those who never returned home. "They're only memories now," he lamented. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, fewer than 1.7 million of the more than 16 million WWII veterans are still alive today.
