Early Life and Education
Born on November 18, 1952, in Lewisham, London, Delroy GeorgeLindo's childhood was marked by humble beginnings. Growing up as the son of Jamaican immigrants with a nurse mother and a father who worked odd jobs, his interest in acting was sparked by a Christmas play and a viewing of "The Taming of the Shrew" on television.
As a teenager, Lindo relocated to Canada with his mother and eventually made his way to the United States. He attended the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, graduating in 1979. Lindo later earned a bachelor's degree in cinematography from San Francisco State University and a master's of fine arts from New York University's Gallatin School.
Film and Theater Breakthrough
Lindo made his screen debut in the 1974 TV series "Dr. Simon Locke." After several minor roles, his career stalled with the release of "More American Graffiti" in 1979. During this time, he worked various jobs, including table bussing, driving a taxi, and selling pesticides over the phone.
In the early 1980s, Lindo broke into Broadway with the production "Master Harold"...and the Boys." He gained recognition on stage and eventually returned to the screen after switching agents.
Spike Lee Collaboration
Spike Lee's biopic "Malcolm X" (1992) provided a significant boost to Lindo's career. He played the role of Malcolm's sidekick, Bumpy Johnson, which earned him critical acclaim. Subsequent collaborations with Lee in "Crooklyn" and "Clockers" solidified Lindo's reputation as a talented character actor.
Villainous Roles and Transition
Lindo's imposing physique and menacing screen presence landed him several villainous roles. However, he sought to diversify his repertoire, playing historical figures such as baseball player Robert Leroy Satchel Paige ("Soul of the Game"), Arctic explorer Matthew Henson ("Glory & Honor"), and Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas ("Strange Justice").
Hollywood Blockbusters and Action Films
Despite his struggles to escape typecasting, Lindo starred in major blockbusters such as "The Devil's Advocate" (1997), "Gone in 60 Seconds" (2000), and "The Core" (2003). He also collaborated with Jet Li in "Romeo Must Die" (2000) and "Unleashed" (2005).
Television and Directing
In the mid-2000s, Lindo transitioned to television, appearing in series such as "Kidnapped," "Law & Order: Trial by Jury," and "Believe." In 2017, he joined the cast of the Emmy-nominated "The Good Fight."
Personal Life
Lindo has been married twice. His first marriage to Kathy Coughlin ended in divorce. He married his current wife, Nashormeh Lindo, in 1990. The couple moved from New York City to Oakland in 1996 and welcomed a son, Damiri, in 2001.
Recent Work and Future Projects
2023 witnessed Lindo's portrayal of Mr. Nancy in the Amazon Prime adaptation of Neil Gaiman's "Anansi Boys." He also starred as Delroy in the drama series "From" and joined the cast of Marvel Studios' "Blade," set for release in 2024 with Mahershala Ali in the titular role.
