Biography of Dennis DeYoung
Start of Solo CareerDennis DeYoung, keyboardist and vocalist of the Chicago rock group Styx, began his solo career in 1984. Before reuniting with his bandmates, he released powerful solo albums such as "Desert Moon," "Back To The World," and "Boomchild."
Reunion and Fourth Solo Album
The reunion of the musicians in Styx was short-lived, giving Dennis the opportunity to record his fourth solo album, "Edge Of The Century." This album was influenced by renowned composers such as George and Ira Gershwin, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, Andrew Lloyd Weber, and Tim Rice.
Return to Styx and Health Issues
In 1996, Styx reunited and released their first album in eight years, "Return To Paradise." However, Dennis was unable to join the band on tour due to a serious viral illness. By the time he recovered, the band had already found a replacement vocalist, Lawrence Gowan. Disappointed by these turn of events, Dennis filed a lawsuit against the band for the right to use the name Styx.
Musical Spirit and New Projects
Dennis DeYoung finally resolved the legal disputes in 2001. Despite the difficulties he faced, his musical spirit remained strong and full of new ideas. He soon composed and recorded a musical based on Victor Hugo's novella "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame." He also participated in a tour of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and rewrote the hit Styx song, "The Grand Illusion," for the soundtrack of the film "Imex."
Ultimate Collection
In 1999, a compilation of songs from Dennis DeYoung's first three solo albums was released under the title "Ultimate Collection."
