Biography of Derek Hough

Derek Hough was born on May 17, 1985 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is an American dancer, choreographer, musician, and actor. Hough moved to London in 1998 to refine his dancing skills under the guidance of the renowned duo Corky and Shirley Ballas. His sister, Julianne, followed suit and together they studied Latin American dance and formed the pop trio '2B1G' (2 Boys 1 Girl) with Mark Ballas.

Hough gained widespread recognition through his appearances on the American television show 'Dancing with the Stars.' He competed in six seasons of the show, winning twice with partners Nicole Sherzinger and Brooke Burke. Hough reached the semi-finals twice with Jenny Garth and Joanna Krupa, and made it to the quarter-finals once with Lil' Kim. However, one of his less successful seasons was with Shannon Elizabeth, where he was eliminated in the seventh week and finished in sixth place. Hough has received three Emmy nominations for outstanding choreography, all of which were earned through his work on the show.

Hough's professional pursuits extend beyond 'Dancing with the Stars.' In 2006, he played the role of Ren in the original production of 'Footloose: The Musical' at the West End Novelo Theatre. On January 8, 2010, Hough made his Broadway debut, performing in the final four shows of 'Burn The Floor.' He is also passionate about music and founded the group 'Almost Amy' (later renamed 'Ballas Hough Band') where he sings, plays the guitar, and occasionally writes songs. The band released their debut album in March 2009.

Before 'Footloose: The Musical,' Hough also appeared in the popular musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar' at the Millfield Theatre and danced in the ensemble of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' at the London Palladium. In 2002, Hough became the Youth Latin American Dance Champion, competing alongside Aneta Piotrowska. Additionally, he has been honored with the 'Outstanding Dancer of the Year' award from LA and the 'Outstanding Dance' award from the New York Dance Alliance.
