Devon Carrow-Sperduti: A Boy Trapped in Isolation

Life in Isolation due to Extreme Allergies

Seven-year-old Devon Carrow-Sperduti of Orchard Park, New York, suffers from severe allergies that can prove fatal. Devon's extreme sensitivity confines him to the safety of his home for most of his life.

VGo Robot Connects Devon to School

To overcome the limitations of his condition, Devon utilizes a VGo telepresence robot that connects to his home computer. Equipped with a webcam, the robot allows Devon to see his classmates and teachers, virtually attending classes. A screen on the robot's front displays Devon's face, giving him a presence in the classroom. Devon operates the robot with a blinking light to indicate when he wishes to answer questions.

A Lifeline for a Son

Devon's mother, Rene, credits the VGo robot as a lifeline for her son's education and socialization. She explains that Devon reacts to a wide range of allergens, even those present in the air, making it impossible for him to interact with others safely.

Acceptance from Classmates

Devon's classmates have welcomed him with open arms. They engage with him through the robot during lessons and even walk him through the hallways. They also created cards with well wishes during Devon's multiple hospitalizations due to severe allergic reactions. Notably, they draw him as a boy, not as a robot.
