Literary Career
Premchand began his literary career as a teacher and school inspector. His first collection of short stories, titled "Love for the Motherland," was published in 1909. However, British colonial authorities confiscated and burned the edition.
Despite this setback, Premchand continued to write prolifically. His novels, including "The Abode of Love" (1922), "The Arena" (1925), "The Battlefield" (1932), and "The Sacrificial Cow" (1936), and his short story collections, such as "Seven Lotuses" (1917) and "The Road to War" (1932), reflected the political events, struggles for social rights, and anti-colonial movement in India.
Political Activism and Influence
Premchand's outspoken criticism of British colonialism and feudalism led to political persecution. His works explored the weaknesses of traditional culture and the dangers of religious fanaticism. He advocated for humanism and social justice, becoming a leading force in the development of critical realism in Urdu and Hindi literature.
Journalistic Contributions
Premchand also played a significant role in promoting realistic and democratic literature in India through his editorial work. He founded and edited the journals "Hans" (1930-1936) and "Jagaran" (1932-1934).
