Early Life and Education

Born in Estonia, Mart Helme graduated from Koikula Gymnasium in 1968 and earned a degree in history from the University of Tartu in 1973.

Career in Diplomacy and Politics

Prior to joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1994, Helme served as Executive Director of the Estonian Writers' Union. As Estonia's Ambassador to the Russian Federation (1995-1999), he played a pivotal role in representing his country's interests.

Upon returning to Estonia in 1999, Helme held various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Deputy Chancellor for Policy and Press. His political engagement began with his membership in the Conservative Club (1999).

From 2001 onwards, Helme served as a lecturer at Audentes International University. He also held advisory roles for the Ministry of Agriculture (2003-2004) and MEP Tunne Kelam (2005-2009).

Chairmanship of the Conservative People's Party (EKRE)

Helme founded the Conservative People's Party (EKRE) and served as its chairman from 2013 to 2020. Under his leadership, the party gained significant traction in Estonian politics.

Scandals and Resignation

In 2019, Helme sparked controversy with critical remarks about Finland's Prime Minister, prompting a vote of no confidence in the Estonian parliament. While the motion ultimately failed, it drew international attention.

A subsequent scandal related to Helme's statements about the 2020 US presidential election resulted in his resignation as Minister of the Interior in November 2020.

Personal Life

Mart Helme is the brother of politician Rein Helme. His first marriage to Sirie Helme produced three children, including twin siblings Martin and Maarja. He subsequently married Helle-Monika Toming, with whom he has two children and a stepson.

Literary Contributions

Helme is known for his controversial articles, which have been criticized as anti-Russian and republished by extremist websites. However, he has also advocated for constructive relations with Russia.

Stance on Bronze Soldier Dispute

During the 2007 Bronze Soldier crisis, Helme publicly supported the Estonian government's decision to remove the Soviet-era monument from its controversial location.
