Early Life and FamilyDiana Blanche Barrymore Blythe was born on March 3, 1921, in New York City to renowned actor John Barrymore and writer Blanche Oelrichs. Her parents' marriage lasted from 1920 to 1928. Diana had two younger half-siblings, Dolores Ethel May Barrymore (1930) and John Drew Barrymore (1932-2004), from her father's subsequent marriage to Dolores Costello. Her niece, John Drew's daughter, is the acclaimed Hollywood actress and director Drew Barrymore.
Education and Career
Diana graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. From 1939 to 1951, she worked as a stage and screen actress. She performed on Broadway and starred in 10 films. In 1957, she released her autobiography, "Too Much, Too Soon," which was adapted into a film of the same name in 1958.
Personal Life and Marriages
Diana married three times but had no children. Her first marriage was to Branwell Fletcher, from 1942 to 1946. She then married John Howard from January to July 1947. Her third marriage was to Robert Wilcox from 1950 to 1955, who died of a heart attack at the age of 45.
Mental Health Struggles and Death
Diana struggled with mental health issues, which worsened towards the end of her life. She attempted suicide several times and eventually succeeded on January 25, 1960, at the age of 38, by overdosing on pills.
