Dick Roan: A Prostate Cancer Journey Transformed

In 2014, Dick Roan, a retired American with fourth-stage prostate cancer, began experiencing symptoms commonly associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Dismissing the concerns as typical signs of aging, he assumed he was facing another common prostate issue.

Diagnosis and Treatment at CTCA

Dick's symptoms worsened, leading him to seek medical attention. A biopsy revealed the presence of stage IV prostate cancer, which was pressing against his bladder and inoperable due to its location. Through a television advertisement, he discovered Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) and realized his insurance covered treatment there. He and his wife, Annette, traveled to Chicago, Illinois, for his initial consultation.

The CTCA Experience

As an academic with a background in health administration, Dick was impressed by the level of care at CTCA. He received nine weeks of radiation therapy in a home-like atmosphere, where the staff was attentive to his well-being.

"The treatment wasn't always easy," Dick recalls. "My body weakened, and as a former football player and fitness enthusiast, it was especially tough. For the first time in my life, I couldn't wait to take naps. I felt like I was aging overnight."

The multidisciplinary team at CTCA supported Dick's physical, mental, and emotional health. "They tracked my overall progress, not just the treatment," he emphasizes.

Ambassador for CTCA

Today, Dick serves as a Patient Ambassador for CTCA, sharing his experience and highlighting the organization's patient-centered approach. "At CTCA, patients aren't left in the dark about their care," he notes. "We understood the medications we were taking and the procedures being performed. The physicians cared about our well-being beyond the treatment itself."

Annette's Perspective

Dick's wife, Annette, shared her unique insights as his caregiver. "Dick had three radioactive implants on the right side of his prostate," she explains. "It minimized the side effects in his bowel and bladder. A nutritionist recommended a diet of preservative-free foods, which helped during radiation."

The time spent away from home provided unexpected benefits for Annette. "We stayed at a hotel in Kenosha, Wisconsin, 13 miles from CTCA," she says. "During short breaks in treatment, we made the most of it. I took up golf, and we enjoyed watching Lipizzaner horses in Wadsworth, Illinois."

The Power of Communication

Annette emphasizes the importance of open communication and relationships in the cancer journey. "Nurses, doctors, and caregivers can't read our minds," she notes. "We have to share our needs and feelings."

"You can't do cancer alone," Annette adds. "The connection between the healthcare team, the patient, and the spouse or caregiver is paramount. At CTCA, your team knows you by name, not by a chart number."

Embracing Life after Cancer

Despite initial fears, Annette's unwavering belief in Dick's recovery gave her strength. "We discussed everything in advance," she says. "Communication helped us navigate the unknown."

Today, Dick has returned to work and together they cherish every moment. "Dick plays the piano; I continue my art," Annette shares. "We live our lives side by side, and I'm grateful for every day."
