Dickon Mitchell: Grenada's Ninth Prime Minister

Early Life and Education

Dickon Mitchell, Grenada's ninth Prime Minister, was born in Petit Espérance, St. David's parish. He earned his Bachelor of Laws (Hons.) from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, and his Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School in 2002.

Legal Career

Following his graduation, Mitchell began practicing as an associate attorney at Grant, Joseph & Co. In 2017, he established his own firm, Mitchell & Co.

Political Career

Mitchell was elected leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on October 31, 2021.

Prime Minister of Grenada

2022 General Election

The NDC, led by Mitchell, emerged victorious in the 2022 general elections, capturing nine of the 15 parliamentary seats with just over 51% of the popular vote. Mitchell hailed the victory as a "day of liberation," declaring that June 24 would be made a national public holiday.

Inauguration and Policy Agenda

On June 24, Mitchell was sworn in as Grenada's ninth Prime Minister, succeeding Keith Mitchell. He pledged to eradicate cronyism and reform the electoral system. Additionally, Mitchell assumed the portfolio of Finance Minister and created a new ministry called the Ministry of Mobilization, Implementation, and Transformation.

Addressing Teachers' Salaries

During his swearing-in ceremony for Cabinet ministers, Mitchell promised to pay teachers their withheld salaries.
