Biography of Didi (Valdir Pereira)

Early Life

Didi, whose real name is Valdir Pereira, was born in Brazil. He came from a family with a military background, and his great-grandfather was a participant in the defense of Sevastopol during the Crimean War in 1855-1856.

Football Career

Didi played as a midfielder and had an illustrious career playing for various clubs. He started his professional career with Americano in 1945-1946, followed by stints at Leixões (1946), Madureira (1946-1950), Fluminense (1950-1956), Botafogo (1956-1958), and Real Madrid in Spain (1958-1960). He returned to Botafogo in 1960-1962, and ended his career at São Paulo in 1962-1964.

Achievements

Didi was a two-time World Cup champion, winning the tournament with Brazil in 1958 and 1962. He made his debut for the national team on April 6, 1952, against Mexico and played his last match on June 17, 1962, against Czechoslovakia. He played a total of 73 matches for Brazil, scoring 20 goals.

The "Folha Seca"

Didi became famous for his technique known as the "folha seca" or "dry leaf." This technique involved putting a unique spin on the ball, making it dip and change direction unpredictably. He showcased this skill during the 1958 World Cup in a match against France, where his shot baffled the goalkeeper and found the back of the net.

Challenges and Success

Didi faced challenges in his career due to racial discrimination prevalent in Brazilian football during the early 20th century. Despite these obstacles, he persevered and earned recognition for his talent. He was known for his calm and composed playing style, often stationed in the middle of the field, orchestrating the team's play.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Didi transitioned into coaching. He had successful coaching stints with Sporting Cristal in Peru, leading them to become a dominant force in Peruvian football. He then worked with River Plate in Argentina, rejuvenating the team and guiding them to the top of the league. Didi faced challenges in Argentina due to a rule requiring coaches to have specific certifications, but he overcame these obstacles and continued to make a significant impact on the game.

Later Years

Following his time in Argentina, Didi worked with several other clubs, including Fenerbahçe in Turkey, the Saudi Arabian national team, and Brazilian clubs Atlético Mineiro and Cruzeiro. Throughout his coaching career, Didi's focus remained on playing attractive and attacking football.

Despite facing adversity and discrimination, Didi's impact on the game of football was profound. His unique style and contributions to the sport continue to be celebrated in Brazil and around the world.
