Diego El Cigala: A Flamenco Legend
Early Life and TrainingDiego Jiménez, known as Diego El Cigala, was born into a renowned Romani (Gypsy) family of artists in Spain. His uncle, Rafael Farina, was a celebrated flamenco singer. Diego began his musical training at the tender age of four.
Rising Star
In 1980, Diego won the Getafe Flamenco Youth Contest, where he caught the attention of the legendary flamenco artist Camarón de la Isla. Diego became Camarón's protégé, honing his vocal techniques under his mentor's guidance. It was Camarón who bestowed upon Diego the nickname "El Cigala" (Spanish for "sea snail").
Collaborations and Solo Career
El Cigala has collaborated with renowned flamenco dancers such as Christopher Reyes, Mario Maya, and Manuela Carrasco. He has also recorded with musicians like Camarón de la Isla, Tomatito, Gerardo Nuñez, Vicente Amigo, and Paco de Lucía.
