Biography of Dimitris Mitropanos

Dimitris Mitropanos was a Greek singer, considered one of the most significant performers of laiko music. Throughout his musical career, he collaborated with renowned Greek composers such as Grigoris Bithikotsis, Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarhakos, Manos Hatzidakis, Marios Tokas, and Thanos Mikroutsikos. He was regarded as one of the best interpreters of Greek music for forty years.

Early Life and Career

Dimitris Mitropanos was born and raised in Trikala, Thessaly. From a young age, he worked during summers to help his family, starting as a waiter in a restaurant and later in a sawmill. In 1964, he moved to Athens and settled with his uncle on Aharnon Street. Among his uncle's acquaintances were singer Grigoris Bithikotsis, Takis Lambropoulos, and musician Yorgos Zambetas. Mitropanos considered Zambetas his mentor and referred to him as his second father.

Collaboration with Mikis Theodorakis

In 1966, Dimitris Mitropanos met composer Mikis Theodorakis. He performed in the concerts series "Romiosini" and "Axion Esti" across Greece and Cyprus. He released his first album in 1967, which included the song "Thessaloniki". Another significant milestone in his career was in 1972 when Mitropanos and Petris Salpeas recorded "Agios Fevrouarios", composed by Dimos Moutsis and with lyrics by Manos Eleftheriou. This marked a new phase in the development of laiko and Greek music in general.

Later Years and Legacy

In July 1999, Mitropanos and Moutsis reunited on stage at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus with Dimitris Galanos and soprano Julia Souglakou as part of the Athens Festival. The concerts were recorded and released on a CD two months later. In 2001, Dimitris Mitropanos collaborated with Dimitris Papadimitriou to record a new album titled "Sto Zitima". In 2005, he released another album called "I Mia Fora Ki Enan Kairo", featuring the opening song "Spasi To Onoma Sou".

In 2009 and 2010, Mitropanos performed several shows with Peggy Zina in "Terpsihori 92". In 2010, he embarked on a tour across cities in North America. From September 2011 until spring 2012, he performed alongside Yannis Kotsiras and Dimitris Basis at "Kentro Athinon". However, in the last few years of his life, Dimitris Mitropanos faced health problems. He passed away on April 17, 2012, in Athens due to acute pulmonary edema. His funeral took place on April 19 at the First Athens Cemetery.
