Dina Manfredini: The World's Oldest Woman
Early LifeDina Manfredini (born Guerri) was born in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, in 1897. In 1920, she immigrated to the United States with her husband, Riccardo Manfredini, and settled in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple welcomed four children: Mary (1921), Dante (1922), Rudy (1924-1997), and Enes (1928).
Working Life
During World War II, Dina worked in a munitions factory. She later held a lifelong job as a janitor, which she continued until her 90s. Remarkably, she often lied about her age to secure employment, fearing that her true age would prevent her from getting a job.
Widowed and Independent
Her husband passed away in 1965 at the age of 79. After his death, Dina lived alone for 42 years, moving into a nursing home only in 2007 at the age of 110.
Exceptional Health and Longevity
At 101, Manfredini overcame colon cancer. At 103, she danced at parties. At 105, she shoveled snow outside her home in winter. Her doctor indicated that her heart was as healthy as a 50-year-old's.
World's Oldest Woman
On December 4, 2012, following the death of American Besse Cooper, Dina Manfredini, at 115 years and 244 days old, became the officially registered oldest woman in the world.
Records
Among her numerous records, Dina Manfredini held the title of the oldest registered immigrant. On December 13, 2011, she became the oldest person of Italian descent. On April 4, 2012, she became the 27th officially verified person in history to reach 115 years of age. She is also the first Italian to live beyond 115.
