Portuguese Mariner of the 15th Century
Dinis Dias was a renowned Portuguese navigator who left an indelible mark on the annals of maritime exploration.
Early Life and Background
Little is known about Dias's early life. Some sources claim that he was the son of João Dias, a fellow explorer who discovered Cape Bojador. Other accounts suggest that he served as an оруженосцем (Portuguese for "squire") to King Afonso V.
Maritime Expeditions
Dias's most significant achievement came in 1444-1445 when he embarked on an expedition that pushed the boundaries of Portuguese exploration. Setting sail from Portugal, he ventured along the western coast of Africa.
Sailing south from Cabo Branco, the southernmost point previously reached by Portuguese mariners, Dias extended his expedition by 800 kilometers. He explored part of the Gulf of Guinea and made the groundbreaking discovery of Cabo Verde (Green Cape).
During his voyage, Dias also discovered the island of Gorée off the Senegalese coast and the Senegal River. These discoveries played a pivotal role in shaping the maritime knowledge of the time.
