Early Career and Success
Sani began his professional football career at the famed Palmeiras club. He later played for Picassicabe on loan, followed by a stint at Comercial. His impressive performances earned him a move to São Paulo, where he clinched the state championship in 1957.
World Cup Triumph and International Stardom
In 1958, Sani became a world champion with the Brazilian national team. He stepped into the starting lineup against the Soviet Union after Zito suffered an injury.
Global Club Success
In 1959, Sani made a high-profile transfer to Argentine giants Boca Juniors for a then-staggering $1 million. He subsequently played for Italian powerhouse Milan, where he reigned victorious in the Italian Serie A and the European Cup in 1963.
Coaching Career and Legacy
Upon retiring from playing, Sani transitioned seamlessly into coaching. He was instrumental in developing a new generation of football stars, including Paulo Cesar Carpegiani at Internacional, Leandro at Flamengo, and Ruben Paz at Peñarol. In 1970, he was offered the position of Brazil national team coach for the World Cup but declined the offer.
